After spending the last day and half in Copenhagen, I can honestly say that it is wonderful. I would love to spend a week or more just in this city and surrounding area. It helped that the weather was beautiful...sunny and 80 (out of character for this region, from what the locals tell us)!
Looking up at the domed ceiling of a church
We were able to do quite a bit today including visiting Marmorkirken which is the largest marble-domed church in Europe. We saw the changing of the guards at Amalienborg Slot, toured the canals on the DFDC Canal Tour boat.
Waiting for the changing of the palace guard
We ate lunch in an outdoor cafe and toured Tivoli Gardens. It really DID remind me of Walt Disney World, which makes sense given what Steve mentioned about Walt's inspiration. It was beautiful and the rides were really secondary to the gardens, water fountains, restaurants, and shops.
Tomorrow, we head to Sweden via the train on Oresund Bridge. It will only take us 35 minutes to get into Sweden. We will then rent a car and drive to Nottja to visit the church where my great, great, grandfather attended. We will be doing quite a bit of driving so we don't have too much else planned. We will spend the night in a town called Vaxjo.
Thanks for following along on this adventure with me! I'll hopefully post an update tomorrow.
Another beautiful day here in Copenhagen. We all slept well and are ready to enjoy the day. We're off to do a boat tour, visit a palace, watch the changing of the guards, and enjoy roller coaster rides at Tivoli!
Per the itinerary she left me, here's what's on tap for their next day of adventures:
THURSDAY, JULY 3
Tour Copenhagen
Well, that's not very specific! So let's go to Wikipedia for a little info, shall we?
Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark. It is situated on the Zealand and Amager Islands and is separated from Malmö, Sweden by the strait of Øresund.
With the completion of the transnational Oresund Bridge in 2000, Copenhagen and the Swedish city of Malmö are connected by a car/rail link and are in the process of integrating their labour markets, resulting in the number of commuters from both sides growing annually.
In 2008, the magazine Monocle listed Copenhagen first in their Top 20 Most Livable Cities Chart, and gave the city the special award as "Best Design City". In addition, it has also been classified as a GaWC Cultural World City, while it is 3rd in Western Europe in the rivalry over regional headquarters and distribution centers, only surpassed by London and Paris.
We made it safely to Copenhagen and it is beautiful here. I didn't sleep hardly at all on the plane so I'm exhausted. But, we're excited and plan to hit the town soon to grab some dinner. Hopefully, I'll catch up on my sleep tonight.
